A home away from home…
“During the last few months of my dad’s life, we spent more time attending medical appointments and visits to the hospital then anyone of us wanted, including dad. This was our new life and none of us were coping well.
We wanted the best for my dad, and we didn’t know where to turn.
One of my mom’s friends Carole, said she was a volunteer at Carpenter Hospice, and we should give them a call. That was a phone call that immediately changed all our lives. We had no idea that we would find our home away from home, but that’s just what happened.
From the moment we walked through the doors of the hospice, we could feel our anxiety levels decrease. The staff and volunteers made sure that my dad was comfortable, relaxed, and calm. Our days were now spent visiting with my dad, enjoying each other’s company, and sharing memories together.
One thing my dad absolutely loved was the lemon loaf that Carole baked almost daily at the hospice. The smell of it baking in the oven filled the hospice. It made our hearts burst to see the smile on my dad’s face when he enjoyed a piece of that lemon loaf. A wonderful memory that we will cherish.
To honour my dad and this wonderful memory, I have included Carole’s lemon loaf recipe. Sometimes it is the simple things in life that bring such joy. This recipe did that for my dad and our family, and Carole was kind enough to let us share a bit of that joy with you.
This is just a small bit of our journey at Carpenter Hospice. There were so many more brilliant memories, and we are incredibly thankful that our community hospice was there for us.
