Volunteering with Carpenter Hospice inspired Stephanie Rollo to complete a certificate as a Personal Support Worker (PSW). She joined the clinical team in May 2016.
“I knew of Carpenter Hospice through friends who had spoken so highly of the care their family members had received here,” said Stephanie. “When I started volunteering here, my personal experience confirmed what they had said. The nurses are so caring and compassionate, and everyone is so friendly. Everyone works together as a team. I knew then that I wanted to get into palliative as a career. It just resonated with me.”
As a PSW, Stephanie provides personal care to residents, and assists the nurses to ensure residents are comfortable. A typical shift begins by organizing the schedule of care for the residents, starting with anyone who has visitors scheduled to come in. Throughout the day, Stephanie frequently checks in on residents to make sure they’re comfortable, talks to family members, keeps the house clean, and helps volunteers with various tasks.
“I’m very honoured to be a PSW that people trust, especially with their personal care,” said Stephanie. “Working in palliative has made me more grateful for all the good people around me.”
