The Healing Power of Music

Our Music Therapist, Avalon Harris, had many sessions with a recent resident and their family outside on the resident’s room patio, by the fountain, and at the resident’s bedside. Though this resident loved music therapy, she was typically quiet when Avalon asked about her favourite music and songs.

During their final music therapy session, the resident was hardly responsive as she neared her end of life. The resident’s sister asked Avalon to play “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga. Avalon knew this song from the radio, so she pulled it up on her phone and gave it her best.

The resident’s mom and sister began singing along – they knew every word.

Though the resident appeared asleep, when she heard them singing, she made some dance moves from the music video and sang along in a whisper. It was a beautiful session.

The family approached Avalon at our Hike to express their thanks and shared that they would remember that moment forever.
